pearl harbor, day 6

IMG_3419
i’ve wanted to visit pearl harbor for as long as i can remember. we have quite a bit of family history on oahu and i have always wanted to see for myself. my great grandparents, jack and isabelle anderson, were stationed just miles away from pearl harbor when the attack happened. my grandma jackie remembers being able to see the pilots in their cockpits as they few in to bomb the harbor. my great grandpa helped with the clean up effort after the attack while the rest of the family was sent back to san diego.

it was emotional being here. it was a beautiful day, as you can see. blue sky and white clouds. calm. peaceful. it’s difficult to imagine the horror that came out of this very same sky 76 years ago.

this is the speech given by president Roosevelt when he addressed the nation the day after the attack. i find the hand written edits very interesting. did you know the original opening line was, “Yesterday, December 7, 1941, a date which will live in world history.”?  “world history” is crossed off and “infamy” was hand written above, to create the version we all know.

“i kind of wish we hadn't come here. this is just too sad.” –eli
he wanted to read every sign, to know all the details. but at the same time, he DIDN’T want to know. i love his heart.
